Websites for accountants

Nobody changes accountant on a whim. They do it in a bad fortnight, and the practice that is easy to find and obviously safe wins that fortnight.

Why it matters in your trade

Nobody shops for an accountant until something goes wrong.

Businesses do not browse for a new accountant for fun. They start looking when something has broken: a deadline missed, a bill nobody warned them about, or a company that has quietly outgrown the person who set it up. That window is short, and while it is open they will look at three or four practices.

So the website is not there to tempt somebody who is perfectly happy. It is there to be findable, obviously credible and easy to contact during the fortnight when a business owner has finally had enough of their current lot.

What you actually get

What an accountancy website has to do.

Reassurance ahead of charm

Qualifications, professional body, how long you have been going, the kind of businesses you already look after. This is a cautious purchase, and safety persuades harder than personality does.

Enough about fees to filter

You do not need a full price list. A sense of what a limited company typically pays in a year stops you quoting for people who wanted £200, and settles the nerves of the ones who feared £10k.

Found at the trigger moment

Searches like "change accountant" or "accountant for limited company" are lower volume than you would like, and nearly everyone making them is ready to move. That is the traffic worth having.

What it costs

Website projects start from £3k.

Most land between £5k and £9k depending on how much the site has to do. You get the exact number before anyone starts work. And if you are just getting going, say so, there is a sensible way to start smaller.

Questions

What accountants and bookkeepers ask us.

Should we put our fees on the website?

A guide, yes. Something like "most limited company clients are between £X and £Y a month" does more good than harm: it filters out enquiries that were never going to convert and settles the nerves of the ones that will. A precise price list is a different matter, because the work varies too much to commit to up front.

Almost all our work comes from referrals. Does a website really matter?

The referral still gets checked. Someone is given your name, looks you up that evening, and decides whether to make contact based on what they find. A good site does not replace the referral, it stops you losing them at the verification step, which is a quieter and more annoying way to lose work.

Every accountancy website says the same things. How do we stand out?

By being specific about who you are actually good for. Naming the sectors you know well, the software you work in and the size of business you suit beats another round of "proactive, trusted, friendly". It also means the enquiries you get are from people you can genuinely help.
